Renovators
- Rhythm and Blueprints
Everybody
Loves the Blues, but I Keep Dreaming about how the Renovator's Boogie,
said Al (The Big One). And now I Don't Ski anymore because when
I took a Special Ride, I fell down and needed a Bandaido on my Excavator.
Well, You Snooze You Lose, so Who's To Blame? said Ted.
And I'll tell you Something Else, said one of the Bobs. I Never Really Saw Your Face until what's-'er-name came over and Blue Reggae. Boy, did she Rip Up The House or what!"
It's Been Done... muttered the other Bob. .
In
January 1997, fresh from an intensive 3 month European tour as lead
vocalist with Dr Feelgood, I had the good fortune to do some radio in my
favourite city of Helsinki. I'd been invited by Teppo Nattila to play some
solo blues piano and vocals on Teppo's Radiomafia Show.
The outcome is this,
my first solo album, and a long way removed from the hectic but satisfying
demands of fronting Dr Feelgood.
These tunes comprise
a handful of blues standards which have meant the most to me over a lifetime
of listening, plus one of my own compositions just for good measure.
The piano arrangements are simple, so the voice is to the fore. What
we've captured is a more introspective Pete Gage, as near as possible to
how I play in those private moments at home by myself - Out
Of Hours. -

Don't
Think, Just Play (MTR 9703)
From the steels mills
of Pennsylvania to the heart of Hollywood arrives bluesman Rich Harper,
and he's not alone. Rich and his botleneck slide, drummer Bob Arkwright,
bass
player
Jon Stenbar, rhythm guitarist Terry Williams and on keyboards Mark Moulding
have come to share the raw essence and powerful truth that is the blues.
Bluesmen don't think about their music - they just feel it, so dont think
about this CD, just play it.

Thor Kristinsson was born in Rekjavik
Iceland and raised in Vancouver, B.C. He moved to Saltspring Island in
1980 and then to Vancouver Island in 1986 and
now lives in the Cobble Hill area just
north of Victoria. While on Saltspring he had
brief collaborations with both Gene Grooms,
and Cathy Roland (a.k.a. Auntie Kate),
who have since both made thier mark on
Vancouver Island's music scene. After
leaving Saltspring Thor worked in The
Suspects band along with brother Hoss until
1995 when Thor and the Thundercats was
conceived.
Hoss Kristinsson:
Bass Guitar
Hoss Kristinsson, Thor's "Big Brother"
provides a nice steady bottom end for
Thor's fiery solos. Hoss shares the same
early backround as Thor but while Thor
moved to Saltspring, Hoss spent the 80's
on Lasquetti Island where he became bass
player for the resident band the Lasquetti
All Stars then joining the Suspects along with
his brother in 1987. In 1995 they formed
Thor and the Thundercats along with drummer
Paul Milne.
Paul Milne: Drums
Paul has lived on Vancouver Island in
the Duncan area for a number of years.
He has played around Vancouver Island,
most recently in the "Saloonatix" band and
has hosted a number of Jam Sessions around
the southern Island.
Wayne Diggins: Saxaphone
Wayne Diggins is a veteran of the music
scene, having played virtually all
over the world and has shared the stage
with the likes of "Albert Collins" and "Buddy
Guy". Most recently he has played with
"Monte Nordstrom" and the Naniamo's "Black
Cat Bone" band with Michael Patrick.
Originally from Ontario, Wayne has spent
the last 10 or so years on Vancouver Island,
with frequent trips to the orient and Europe.
Webmasters comments: The music and musicians are exceptional
on 'Once In A Bluemoon' but the singing is adequate. This CD has moved
into the top 50 in my collection. A great debut album.

Sunny
Ridell - Sunny ! Sunny
! Sunny !
Sunny
was born to the blues. He began his career on the street corners of his
hometown, Crystal Springs, Mississippi, singing the blues when he was only
ten years old. The music was in me and it just had to come out.
Sunny has come along way from that little boy on the corner. He has performed in all the fifty states of the US and several overseas countries. His single Come Out Into My World sold 350,000 copies. His single I'm Black and I know I'm Somebody was banned in Mississippi. He has appeared in eighteen movies including Outlaw Blues and Leadbelly. One thing hasn't changed, Sunny can still sing the blues.
With his own band, T.C.
and The Midnights,
Sunny continues
to play his own brand of down home blues with a big-city style. After
a career of over forty years, the music is still there. And like good coffee
it's coming out hotter and stronger than ever before.

Train
This
new release of laid back blues is entitled Blues Train.
A very pleasant, balanced, well produced studio recording from this slick
Florida Keys band. The raunchy soulful voice and harp playing of Lady 'A'
gives this CD a freshness and originality that is rarely surpassed by contemporary
blues performers. First up on the CD is Snatch
and Grab It which is a swinging version
of a Katie Webster song, followed by HoneyHush, the
band's tribute to the late Albert Collins.
Lady 'A's vocals are certainly not in the Betty Smith class yet, but she has a pleasing voice, her harp solos are superb. I feel Ric Arra on lead guitar and Lady 'A' excel in the slower tracks like As The Years Go Passing By. Thisis my pick of the album, closely followed by the title track, an original tongue in cheek poke at a famous country song and a monotonous dance craze, co-written by Ric and Lady 'A'.
"Ric Arra sounds like Eric Clapton when he still cared about playing"

"Riders On The Storm"
Lightning Red is an Austin, Texas Blues guitarist and singer who has already recorded one CD prior to this one. The first was a great, solid Blues set, but certainly didn't prepare me for what I heard on "Texas Thunder Blues."
Red has gone to a more understated approach in his music, and the result is a stunningly authentic sounding set that seems to simmer with real heat and passion. His guitar work has always been great, but the light touch combined with taut phrasing has created a sound that certainly will put him up there in the upper ranks of great players.
One pleasant surprise
is that although he includes rock material, such as the Door's "Riders
On The Storm," and Don Nix's "Goin' Down," the results are not like those
LA Rockers and Jeff Beck Group. It's more like how Albert King would have
done it in the early 70's, with that mean, moody sound he developed during
that
decade. Add to that
some incredible down-home Blues, and I think we have a CD that leaves no
doubt that Red is a real Bluesman. - Delta

This is a well
bound and printed A4 sized paperback publication, which is well worth the
cost. It seems to concentrate on American and British blues releases. I
think it could be improved with some biblios, including other countries
CD releases, further references to magazines and perhaps Internet sites.

Bluedogs (BD9701)
This
band are a tight knit unit on and off the stage. Guitarist Kevin
Maring formed the band out of his passionate
love for the deep emotional blues of the masters. He
recruited
Marc
Suwanski who had been playing piano since
childhood. Kevins' older brother Chris Maring
joined them on bass. When their drummer left, Kev asked Ken
Steveson to fill in. Their music flows
naturally and despite all their years of playing together, they see themselves
only at the beginning of a lifelong journey of artistic growth. The
Bluedogs
have just released their self-titled
debut CD recorded over a weekend at Acme Recorders in Chicago,
few overdubs were used and the vocals and solos were recorded live.

Sandy
Atkinson is a archetype 90's
blues artist, eclectic in a way that would have been unheard of in the
70's. In fact, to a purist, some of her songs would be perceived as "rock"
or bluesy folk-rock in the Melissa Etheridge mold. However, being female,
she'd be less likely to be a purist anyway. If one looks at blues history,
hard core blues women are pretty rare.
Sandy Atkinson is
similar to a Melissa Etheridge in that her music is a mix of rock, blues,
and folk, but in her case, the blues is heavily emphasized.
This self-produced self titled CD runs a nice range of styles, anchored by a strong blues sensibility, excellent production and musicianship.
It would be hard
to say that Sandy is a blues artist in the classic mold, whatever that
may mean. And this music is pretty far from the delta, but then, it was
a place where one started, but definitely got out of. Sandy's still at
a nice spot on that road. Email

Kenny"Blue"
Ray
"You wouldn't believe the demand there's been for this fella - so, we've HAD to get his records. And, yes I'll admit, he is damn good. He's a steaming guitar player who will appeal to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Freddie King & Albert Collins fans. He's a seriously dynamic guitarist with a flair for the blues which'll knock you out. On his 3 CDs, be delivers a good selection of instrumentals (like Ronnie does) but when the song needs vocals, he's got a great partner in Charilie Chavez who's got about as convincing blues voice as you could want - and he also can play some mean bluesharp. We should've listened to Kenny a long time ago!!!" -- Red Lick Magazine/Catalogue, March/April 1996.
"I've said it once, but it bears repeating;
this guy is one of the more prolific blues performers on the west coast,
if not in the nation. Bullseye, Black Top and Alligator, take note: this
guitarist wants to make it! It's rumored he actually takes a break from
recording during the NBA playoffs!. With each release, Kenny concentrates
more directly on original material. On this, his fourth self-produced CD,
9 of the 13 cuts represented here are "Blue" Ray or bandmember compositions.
A strong proponent of the modern Texas school, "KBR" is a great guitarslinger,
he touches on the Alberts and the Vaughans with equal amounts of respect
and attention to detail, and his Chuck Berry musings would make Keith R.
sit up and take notice." Heck, even co-peninsula resident John
Lee Hooker is a big fan of Kenny Ray."

Magic
Dick & Jay Geills - Little Car Blues (Rounder
CD 3141)
Those who remember the J. Geils Band will
find this straight blues outing by two of the founding members a listenable
and enjoyable set. Magic Dick, who is probably one of the best harp players
around, is an average singer.
There aren't any explosive rockers like
"Looking For A Love," or "First I Look At The Purse," which were J. Geils
concert staples. Instead you get some fine blues, like the "Blues Time
Theme" and a very swinging cover of Jay McShann's "Jumpin' Blues." I won't
say that these guys have finally come home to the blues, but for an old
fan who listened to "Full House" more than a few times, this is like a
visit from an old friend you haven't seen for awhile
.
Shafran-Klegseth
Band - Relentless Blues
.
Guitar Shorty is a blues shouter, who sports
a guitar sound that has a fat, distorted sound with a smooth edge, which
makes for a solid, pleasurable listen.
There's no fooling around on this one,
it's solid blues. Standout cuts include a very hard shuffle called, "I'm
The Cleanup Man," a B.B. King meets Stax funker "You Better Get Wise To
Yourself," and the blues ballad "I Don't Know Why" Shorty's is a classic
shouter, his voice is bound to grab your attention . This guy has a good
voice. It may sound like a contradiction, but while no song really stands
out, it's a CD I can recommend to anyone who likes good solid blues
.
Tracy
Nelson - Move On (Rounder CD 3143)
I've never understood why Tracy hasn't
become a big star, when so many have clearly benefitted from the current
popularity of the blues. Ever since her work with Mother Earth in the 60's,
she's effortlessly covered the blues, country, and soul in a series of
fine records including this one. The backup band is top notch and includes
more than a few stars, and like most of her music, is an seamless blend
of blues, country, soul and rock. Her voice is as powerful as any gospel
singer with an emotional level that can only come from the heart. The opener
is a great funky rocker, with a rocking slide guitar called, "Living On
Love." "Good To You Baby" and "Got Me Goin'" are also great songs in the
same mold. As with any Nelson record, the ballads are often the high point,
and "Tonight I'll Dream" is an achingly good one, with a gospel feel that
probably is a real show stopper live. When I think of great women singers,
I've always included Nelson, and I'd recommend this CD to anyone who wants
to hear some of the best blues and blues rock in recent times.
Sonny
Landreth - Blues Attack
Over the last decade, Sonny Landreth has developed a reputation as an exceptional songwriter and slide guitarist whose records have explored the intersection of modern rock with "southern" influences. One of the most celebrated guitarists in the world, Sonny's popularity is based on not only his impeccable taste but on his unique technique, a merging of Chet Atkins- style finger-picking and Sonny's own revolutionary approach to the bottleneck slide guitar. Guitar Player magazine said of Landreth, " . . . When discussing modern slide guitar masters on the technical level of the late Duane Allman, Ry Cooder, George Harrison or the late Lowell George, it's pointless to argue over who tops the list. One thing is clear, however, any future discussions will have to crowd another name onto the pedestal.... "
